What is Mini-LED?
Mini-LED is an evolution of traditional LED-backlit LCD technology. Instead of dozens of backlight zones, Mini-LED panels use thousands of small LEDs behind the LCD layer. This allows much more precise local dimming, where different areas of the screen can be independently brightened or darkened.
How does it compare to OLED?
Contrast: OLED still wins with true pixel-level black. Mini-LED gets much closer than traditional LCD, but halos can appear around bright objects on dark backgrounds because each dimming zone covers more than one pixel.
Brightness: Mini-LED wins here, as it can sustain very high brightness across the full screen. OLED is limited by its organic materials and thermal management.
Burn-in risk: Mini-LED has zero burn-in risk. OLED has some risk with static content over long periods.
Viewing angles: OLED offers consistent colors from any angle. Mini-LED (being LCD-based) shows some color and contrast shift at extreme angles.
Price: Mini-LED panels are generally cheaper than OLED for the same size. The gap is narrowing as OLED production scales up.
Blooming explained
The main weakness of Mini-LED is blooming (also called haloing). When a bright object is displayed on a dark background, the backlight zone illuminating that object also lights up the surrounding dark area slightly. This creates a halo effect.
More dimming zones means less blooming. High-end Mini-LED monitors have 2,000 or more zones, which significantly reduces the effect. Budget Mini-LED monitors with fewer zones have more noticeable blooming.
Which one to pick
Choose Mini-LED if you need sustained high brightness, worry about burn-in (especially for productivity or static content), or want to save money.
Choose OLED if contrast is your top priority, you watch content in a dim room, or you want the fastest pixel response time for competitive gaming.
