How to test for pixel inversion artifacts
LCDs have to flip the voltage across each liquid crystal cell every frame, otherwise the crystals suffer permanent damage. That flipping is meant to be invisible, but specific fine patterns line up with the inversion scheme and reveal it as shimmer, flicker or a faint crosshatch.

Is pixel inversion a defect?

Why do I only see it on certain patterns?

Is pixel inversion the same as PWM flicker?
No. PWM flicker comes from the backlight switching on and off rapidly to control brightness, and affects the whole screen. Inversion is a pixel-level voltage artifact in the liquid crystal layer and only shows on specific patterns. They can look similar but have different causes and different fixes.
Can pixel inversion be fixed?
Not by the user. It is determined by the panel driver design. If a display shows severe inversion artifacts on everyday content, that is a panel quality issue and grounds for a return rather than something to configure away.
